Pig Destroyer - Prowler in the Yard.
There are 22 really good reasons why 'Prowler In The Yard' is often considered one of the best grindcore albums ever released.
Scott Hull took the writing on this record to new avenues, a mixture of hardcore punk, grindcore and thrash. The artwork by Paul Booth is seriously disturbing; as is the opener 'Jennifer' and then the ride begins.
'Prowler…' hammers along with no regard for human safety, it's music for harsh times. Even at this early stage of PD's life, the riffs are hook-laden and tight. 'Chearleader Corpses' and 'Trojan Whore' are pure beat driven thrash belters. Brian Harvey on the drums is a powerhouse, he has a loose approach to fills that gives a live feel to the tracks. Most tracks on 'Prowler…' are a shade over a minute long, fulfilling Grind Rule No3.
JR Hayes veers from madman howls to towering screams in a beat, the lyrics themselves disturbed and shocking; nothing is off limits. 'Dyed red hair, a forest green dress and a pair of kitchen knives, It was the last time I ever saw a rose'. Towards the end of 'Prowler…', the tracks metamorphose into sludge. 'Hyperviolet' is a wave of violence into a cold drone flanked by 'Starbelly', itself wreathed in smoke and filth.
Of course we will mention 'Piss Angel', chill out! The closing track is a seething, angry belch of anguish to all that is decent, grinding to a standstill with the conclusion to the 'Jennifer' story, the macabre tale reading like Patrick Bateman's bedtime reading. Sure Pig Destroyer have released better albums since, but this one is well worth the attention and praise.
